CRITICAL PAPER RESPONSES

Hannah Whitaker Presentation

When I first heard about the Indecisive Moment Reception, I was quite excited to speculate the variety of artworks from different artist.   Broadening my exposure of the contemporary art world is very exciting and exhilarating to experience.  However, I could not attend the artist discussion panel that was held on October 25.  Though, I did attend Hanna Whitaker’s presentation of her work on October 26.  At first, I was quite skeptical about going to Whitaker’s presentation because of the difference in intellectual aspects I have developed over the course of my art career.

As I attended the presentation, I arrived on the dot at 7:00pm.  The lecture room was pact, and I stood outside of the room - hearing what Whitaker has to say about her art.  She reviewed some of her past work, for example, Whitaker showed on of her prints taken with a 4x5 camera.  The piece demonstrated the utilization of implied textures through out the piece, which was muted by monochromatic brown tones.  Another piece she showed at the presentation was one of her most recent work, which is displayed at the Ringel Gallery.  The artwork portrayed rose images of rose petals, and reconstructed them to make a cubist image.  Her work is very clean, and minimalistic, which captures the essence of pure forms.

During Hannah Whitaker’s presentation, she talked about how her art is influential in the contemporary art world.  The process of how she approaches her art in a social constructive manner – meaning she pays attentions to how society is evolving in today’s fast paced world.  For example, she utilized the emoji symbols that are trending on social media.  She uses relatable content so her audience feels included in the art making process.  Also, Whitaker crops, scales and recontextualizes different positive and negative forms to recreate new objects.  She plays with natural and unnatural elements to create a contemporary piece.

Overall, the presentation was very informative and admirable.  It was nice to hear what the artist had to say about the artwork rather then the audience interpreting the artwork.  Honestly, I wished I had arrived earlier so I would of actually had to seat to sit in.  I would of experience a richer and enhanced experience with the presentation.
