Final
Project: Artist Statement
When
I created the concept for the final project, I wanted to represent my
perspective about how I cope with depression. In order for me to help me understand my
depression, I created a sculpture to help me visualize the small world I live
in when I am depressed.
My depression
encages my perspective on life. So, the
first initial thought to express this concept was to build a ‘cage’ for the
final project. When I am depressed, I
have these feelings of entrapment. To
capture the feeling of entrapment, I built a jail structure. Also, I wanted to build objects representing
the activities I utilize to cope with depression. For example, the bed symbolizes the feeling
of comfort the object provides when I am depressed. Also, the bathtub symbolizes the relaxing,
soothing warmth I receive from soaking in the water. The woods scene symbolized the joy I find in
walking through the woods; the sounds and sights of nature soothe my soul as I
walk through the woods. Holistically,
the small world captures the essence of how I perceive the world through
depressing eyes.
Most of the textures
and materials in the image represent the overall view when I look at the world
through depressing eyes. The color of
the stone provides a warm feeling in the overall image, which provide an in
depth perspective of how I perceive my depression. Also, I captured complex and realistic shadow
to provide different feelings throughout the body of works.
